Elizabeth Kertesz is an Honorary Senior Fellow of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (University of Melbourne). Her long-standing research collaboration with Professor Michael Christoforidis resulted in publication of the internationally acclaimed monograph Carmen and the Staging of Spain: Recasting Bizet's Opera in the Belle Epoque (Oxford University Press, 2019), along with other chapters and articles on Spanish music, dance and entertainment of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Her broader research interests include opera and musical theatre of the same period, and film music (especially in films that represent Spain or Spanish themes, to 1950). She continues to research and publish on the English composer Ethel Smyth (1858-1944), who was the subject of her PhD (University of Melbourne, 2001), including a commissioned chapter for the forthcoming Cambridge Companion to Ethel Smyth (edited by Christopher Wiley, Cambridge University Press).

Since 2006, Dr Kertesz has organised and co-convened a series of international symposia (with Prof Christoforidis) on topics including Spanish music, Hispanic exoticisms, guitar history, music and politics in the the 1930s. She has presented her research at a wide range of international conferences and symposia, including the American Musicological Society and the International Musicological Society, as well as regular participation in the annual meetings of the Musicological Society of Australia.

Dr Kertesz has been Convenor for the national conferences of the Musicological Society of Australia in both 2022 and 2024, and has also chaired the Program Committees for these two events (see https://msa.org.au).
Since 2022, she has also been a member of the editorial team of the MSA's flagship journal, Musicology Australia (published by Taylor & Francis), acting as copy editor.
